Inotiv's SiFT program is a sentinel free, soiled bedding health monitoring program designed to enhance your biosecurity and research animal welfare. This program optimizes the detection of rodent pathogens thereby providing comprehensive health surveillance program while supporting the 3Rs. Our SiFT sampling filter kit reduces the use of sentinel animals and can be used with any cage type.

Key Benefits of Inotiv's SiFT Program

  • Aligns with 3R Principles: SiFT supports the Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement of animal use in health monitoring. By moving away from traditional dirty bedding sentinels, we reduce the number of animals required and refine testing methodologies for improved animal welfare.
  • Advanced Pathogen Detection: Our SiFT program utilizes cutting-edge techniques to offer highly sensitive and specific pathogen detection. This helps maintain colony health and ensures the integrity of your research by identifying potential health issues early and efficiently. Explore our comprehensive mouse and rat health panels.
  • Improved Operational Efficiency: SiFT streamlines your health surveillance program, potentially reducing labor, material costs, and overall resource allocation associated with traditional sentinel animal maintenance. This leads to more efficient rodent health management.
  • Consistent & Reliable Data: By standardizing the sampling and testing process, SiFT provides more consistent and reliable data, crucial for accurate health assessments and maintaining high biosecurity standards in your facility. See the impact firsthand by downloading our SiFT case study to review real-world results.
  • Reduced Animal Stress & Handling: SiFT minimizes animal handling and stress associated with sentinel transfers and procedures, contributing to a more refined and humane animal care program. Download our SOP for a detailed look at our rigorous methodology.

SiFT: A Powerful Complement, Not a Sole Solution

At Inotiv, we emphasize that no single methodology is 100% perfect for comprehensive health monitoring. While Sentinel Free Testing (SiFT) offers significant advantages, particularly in aligning with the 3Rs, relying on one method alone carries inherent risks due to its specific limitations.

We strongly recommend integrating SiFT into a broader, multi-faceted health monitoring program. By combining SiFT with other screening strategies, such as direct testing, serology, or PCR, you can create a more robust and resilient biosecurity framework tailored to your unique research and facility requirements. This layered approach ensures thorough pathogen detection and optimal research animal welfare.

Let Inotiv assist you in designing a comprehensive program to meet your specific needs and mitigate potential risks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use the filter kit?

It is easy!  Place the filter(s) into a clean/sterile empty cage, add a 15ml of dirty bedding from each occupied cage, shake and place back on your rack. Download our SOP for more detailed information.

What agents will be tested?

Click here to access the mouse or rat panels and agents tested. All testing is performed using PCR technology.

How does detection sensitivity compare to live sentinel animals?

Molecular biology techniques provide significantly higher sensitivity for detecting infectious diseases, including subclinical infections that sentinel animals often miss. Inotiv has invested in digital PCR equipment that can precisely identify borderline results.

Will this work with our existing rodent colonies and facility setup?

Sentinel Free Filter health monitoring adapts to all research environments - from mouse and rat colonies in a variety of caging from open top to IVC to other sophisticated ventilation systems.

What about regulatory compliance and research integrity standards?

Sentinel free testing aligns with animal welfare guidelines while providing superior pathogen status monitoring that protects research results.

How frequently should environmental testing be performed?

Testing frequency is determined based on your facility’s risk profile, with most institutions maintaining or improving their current surveillance schedules. SiFT offers significant advantages, but should be integrated into a broader, multi-faceted health monitoring program.
